My name is Desert Motel, though most call me Desi. I was born on a chilly February 15, 2011, in New York, sired by Wild Desert and out of Motel Malibu, whose sire was Bates Motel. My early days were filled with the dreams that every thoroughbred foal carries—visions of racing glory, the thunder of hooves on the track, and the roar of the crowd. But fate had something else in store for me.
My breeder, Susan Kayne, had always been passionate about thoroughbred racing. But as I grew, she began to see the dark side of the industry—the abusive drugging, the blame placed on the horses, the injuries, and the tragic fate of many who were sold for slaughter once their racing days were over. This awakening changed everything for her. I was the last horse Susan bred before she decided that she could no longer be a part of an industry that so often discarded the very animals it claimed to celebrate.
Susan, now the founder and CEO of Unbridled Sanctuary, made a promise that day—to me, and to herself—that she would take responsibility for every horse she had brought into this world. And so, when I could no longer race, instead of being sent away, I found myself on a different path, one that led me to a life where my well-being came first.
Today, I’m part of the lesson program at Dutch Manor Stable in Albany, New York, where I’ve found a new purpose. I’m not just a horse being ridden; I’m a teacher, a companion, and a trusted friend. But no matter where I go, I know that I have a forever home waiting for me at Unbridled Sanctuary, a place where I’m valued for who I am, not for what I can do.
Unbridled is more than just a sanctuary—it’s a testament to the power of compassion and responsibility. Susan leads by example, showing the world that every horse deserves to be cared for throughout their natural lifespan. Without her, my life could have been very different. But because of her, I’m living a life filled with love, safety, and dignity.
To everyone who supports Unbridled, thank you. Your kindness is the reason I’m here today, thriving instead of just surviving. Please continue to support sanctuaries like Unbridled, so that horses like me can live out our lives to the fullest.
