OUR DARK HORSE
A feature documentary about the life of a horse, and the profound question of who she is.
Filmed over three years at Unbridled Sanctuary, Our Dark Horse follows Karen Sue’s Kitten, affectionately known as Kitty, a Thoroughbred mare who survived the American slaughter pipeline twice before finding permanent refuge at Unbridled.
Directed by Grace Barry and produced with Dominique Hessert Owens, the film invites audiences to look beyond what horses do for us and consider who they are when nothing is asked of them.
At its heart is a question that has shaped my life's work: Who is the horse when no one is asking her to perform, produce, earn, or obey?
Our Dark Horse makes its sold-out world premiere at the 27th Woodstock Film Festival on October 17, 2026, followed by its Texas premiere at the Lone Star Film Festival on November 5.
